Taking place in a fictional version of the world that was ravaged by nuclear war, Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro novels provided a harrowing picture of survival in Moscow's underground railway system after such a catastrophe. Popular in his home country, Glukhovsky's works inspired a series of video game adaptations by Ukrainian studio 4A Games, bringing Metro to a global audience. Nearly five years since the release of Metro Exodus, a new game in the franchise has been revealed to the public.
A trailer for Metro Awakening was showcased during Sony's recent State of Play presentation, announcing a 2024 launch date for the PSVR 2, Steam VR, and Meta Quest systems. Developer Vertigo Games stated that Metro Awakening will provide fans with a new, story-driven VR adventure acting as a prequel to Glukhovsky's Metro novels. The Netherlands-based indie studio, known for Arizona Sunshine 2, aims to deliver an immersive experience.
Vertigo Games assured that Metro Awakening will feature the familiar stealth sections and survival mechanics of previous Metro games, now elevated with advanced VR technology. Involvement of Glukhovsky as a story and lore consultant further adds to the game's development. Despite facing legal issues, Glukhovsky's contribution remains significant.
