While Terraria appears simple, its mechanics can be puzzling for newcomers. Background walls, a seemingly basic element, possess various features that can pose challenges. Though players can easily buy walls from merchants to construct their initial home, altering the layout can be problematic.

The complexities arise when players attempt to break walls in dungeons or catacombs, a task that initially seems impossible. Destroying background walls in Terraria demands a special tool and an understanding of specific game features.

Breaking Background Walls in Terraria

To remove background walls in Terraria, players need to create and utilize a tool known as a Hammer. The initial Wooden Hammer can be crafted using just 8 Wood on the Work Bench, but its speed and effectiveness are limited. It's only capable of breaking walls made from the most basic materials and is time-consuming. However, higher-quality versions of the tool can be crafted. Moreover, as the game progresses, various Hamaxes become available, capable of both wall removal and tree cutting.

Alternatively, players can use explosives or fire sources. Unlike the Hammer, Explosives can destroy most background walls found in the game world, though this renders them unusable. Fire can easily destroy flammable walls but also prevents their subsequent use.

In situations where a Hammer alone is insufficient to break background walls, players may need to employ these methods. When breaking walls in dungeons, mines, or similar locations, it's advisable to start from where the wall ends. Alternatively, using explosives to destroy part of the wall and create an edge from which to start mining with the Hammer can be effective.

It's important to note that mining any wall usually yields its Safe version. For instance, a stone wall from a mine may attract monsters, but if installed in a house, it won't spawn underground creatures. Conversely, initially Safe walls will remain safe.
