Sonic Superstars Receives Latest Update

Highlights

  • Sonic Superstars has been updated to version 1.15, offering players the ability to reset their scores in Time Attack Mode while addressing bugs to improve overall performance and stability.
  • Despite initial sales figures falling below expectations, Sega remains dedicated to enhancing Sonic Superstars through online updates and downloadable content (DLC).
  • The upcoming release of the Sonic Prime animated series and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 film is anticipated to generate heightened interest in Sonic Superstars throughout 2024.

Sega has commenced 2024 with a fresh Sonic Superstars update. The previous year was filled with thrilling Sonic content, culminating in the launch of Sonic Superstars in October. In contrast to Sonic Frontiers’ open-world 3D approach, Superstars revives the Blue Blur’s side-scrolling origins, presenting a 2D platforming adventure where Sonic and friends race to thwart a trio of villains under the leadership of Dr. Eggman. Sonic Superstars introduced new elements to the traditional, high-speed Sonic gameplay, including unlockable Chaos Emerald powers and co-op/competitive multiplayer modes.

Although Sonic Superstars initially fell short of Sega’s sales targets after its late 2023 debut, Sonic Team remains fully committed to enriching the game through online updates and DLC. Aside from routine bug fixes, Sonic Superstars incorporated LEGO renditions of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to complement the Sonic and Eggman pre-order skins, as well as a new version of Amy inspired by her appearances from Sonic Adventure onward. More recently, Sonic acquired a festive holiday character skin in December, akin to the addition in Sonic Frontiers during late 2022.

The most recent update for Sonic Superstars is now available on all major platforms. As per the patch notes, Update 1.15 introduces an option to reset player scores in Time Attack Mode. However, this action solely affects scores stored in the user’s local save data, leaving the scores on Sonic Superstars’ online leaderboards untouched. Additionally, Update 1.15 encompasses various unspecified bug fixes.

Shortly after the aforementioned holiday skin was incorporated into Sonic Superstars, a dataminer reported uncovering hints about future DLC. This includes the potential appearance of Sonic’s brooding rival, Shadow the Hedgehog, although this might take the form of Sonic donning a Shadow costume rather than a classic-style version of the dark hedgehog himself. Moreover, Amy could receive a “retro diner” outfit referred to as “IHop Amy” in the leaked source code.

Meanwhile, Sonic Team is commencing 2024 with a more modest Sonic Superstars update, offering players a reset option for Time Attack Mode alongside minor quality-of-life bug fixes. Despite its sluggish start in sales, Sega remains optimistic about Sonic Superstars in the new year, with the recently-launched third season of the Sonic Prime animated series and the forthcoming Sonic The Hedgehog 3 film potentially sparking increased interest in Superstars as 2024 progresses.
