Grasshopper Manufacture's renowned figure Suda51 has excitingly unveiled two fresh elements being introduced in the upcoming Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered. These additions include a New Game Plus mode and a variety of new outfits for the game's protagonist, Garcia Hotspur. The remaster of this underappreciated 2011 third-person comedy horror shooter is scheduled for a 2024 release.
The original Shadows of the Damned was a collaboration between Electronic Arts and Grasshopper, with industry luminaries like Suda51, former Resident Evil creative director Shinji Mikami, and ex-Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka at the helm. The remaster was first announced in June 2023 to bring this cult classic to modern platforms after its digital delisting in 2021. PAX East 2024 showcased a demo and the newly titled Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, complete with a dedicated booth for fans to experience the game firsthand. Suda51 was present at the event to discuss the remaster and its new features.
During an interview at PAX East, Suda shed light on the game's development history, emphasizing the minimal changes made in the remaster's gameplay compared to the original. He confirmed the addition of two features he initially envisioned for the game: a New Game Plus mode and a selection of new costumes for Garcia.
What Lies Ahead for Shadows of the Damned
Despite the challenges faced during Shadows of the Damned's production, Suda51 remains passionate about the project. Expressing interest in revisiting the game's universe with a sequel, he hinted that a successful reception of the remastered version could pave the way for future installments. The gameplay of Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered draws inspiration from third-person horror shooters like Resident Evil 4, promising an engaging experience for fans eager to dive back into its world.
