Sea of Thieves PlayStation Store listing has unveiled a new condition for PS5 gamers – owning a Microsoft account to dive into the popular pirate-themed open-world adventure. With the imminent arrival of Sea of Thieves on PS5, Rare, the developer, is about to break a remarkable 39-year tradition.

The imminent cross-platform debut of Sea of Thieves marks a significant milestone as Rare ventures into uncharted territory by offering a title on a PlayStation platform for the first time since its establishment in 1985. Fans are no strangers to Rare's iconic portfolio, encompassing classics like GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and more. Among its recent triumphs, Sea of Thieves stands out, soon to be accessible on PlayStation consoles alongside other Xbox exclusives.

The Sea of Thieves PlayStation Store listing specifies that a 'Microsoft account registration, acceptance of Microsoft Services Agreement and Privacy Statement [is] required to play.' Gaming journalist Stephen Totilo elaborated that PS5 users of Sea of Thieves will have the ability to sync their PlayStation and Microsoft accounts, unlocking features such as cross-platform invites, voice communication, and progression tracking. Setting up a Microsoft account is expected to be a straightforward process, presenting a reasonable trade-off for the PS5 debut of Sea of Thieves on April 30. Furthermore, Totilo noted that Grounded, arriving on PS5 and Switch on April 16, will also mandate a Microsoft sign-in for crossplay, cross-saving, and shared world functionalities. Nonetheless, Grounded players uninterested in these capabilities should be able to enjoy the game without a Microsoft account.

Preparing for Sea of Thieves on PS5

The impending PS5 launch of Sea of Thieves is poised to help the game surpass Ubisoft's Skull and Bones, a title grappling with lackluster reviews and dwindling player engagement since its recent release. Ubisoft's seafaring adventure spent over a decade in sporadic development before finally hitting the shelves earlier this month.

In a recent development, Sea of Thieves rolled out a substantial update that surprised Xbox and PC users with a hefty download size exceeding 90 GB, while Steam users were treated to a more modest 10.5 GB download. Rare justified the update's bulk by pointing to the integration of the latest Xbox Game Development Kit, promising that future patches will be notably leaner. The update not only enhanced performance but also elevated the game's visual appeal, particularly in water rendering over long distances.

Other Xbox titles making their way to PlayStation consoles include Hi-Fi Rush, set for release on March 19, and Pentiment, already available since February 22. The PlayStation community is buzzing with anticipation for Hi-Fi Rush, a multiple award nominee at The Game Awards 2023.
