SaGa Emerald Beyond, part of Square Enix's renowned SaGa series, presents a challenging combat system that can initially overwhelm new players. However, mastering the intricacies of combat is key to succeeding in the game.

Let's delve into the fundamentals of combat and equip players with the knowledge needed to emerge victorious in any battle.

Unraveling Combat Basics

In the heat of battle, players can strategically select the techs and spells their characters will employ for that round. Techs, denoted by a sword icon, execute immediately, while spells, indicated by a staff icon, require chanting time and may activate in the following round. Characters default to defense if no action is chosen. It's worth noting that characters may choose to defend even while attacking.

The timeline displayed at the bottom of the screen illustrates the attack sequence of characters, aiding players in arranging their strategies efficiently. This timeline is dynamic and adjusts based on the chosen actions. Once decisions are made, players initiate combat by pressing the engage button.

Demystifying HP, LP, & BP

HP represents a character's health and diminishes as they sustain enemy attacks. If HP depletes to zero during a battle, the character is incapacitated but will recuperate to full health post-battle. Unfortunately, there is no in-battle health restoration available.

LP functions akin to character lives. Each time a character's HP hits zero, they lose one LP. Once all LP is expended, the character is sidelined from battles but can regain LP when removed from the active roster. Certain roles automatically recover LP after battles, safeguarding them from total elimination.

BP signifies the characters' combat capability. These stars indicate the number of attacks a character can launch, with each attack consuming BP. Players should manage BP efficiently to ensure all characters can participate. BP replenishes at the start of each turn.

Harnessing United Attacks, Overdrive, and Showstoppers

United Attacks are collaborative combos where characters synchronize their attacks for a synchronized strike. If the combo aligns, a united assault occurs; otherwise, the chain breaks.

Overdrive involves a subsequent united assault by a subset of characters after the initial attack. Achieving a combo rate of 150% triggers Overdrive, which is guaranteed at 200%.

Showstoppers showcase individual characters executing a united attack solo. For this to happen, two empty timeline slots must flank the character, allowing them to unleash their techs and spells independently.
