Rockstar Games Raises Price for GTA+ Subscription Service

Highlights

  • Fans express discontent as GTA+ subscription cost rises without prior notice from Rockstar Games.
  • Starting June 11, 2024, GTA+ on next-gen consoles will cost $2 USD more per month, with no official explanation provided.
  • Despite criticism, Rockstar enhances GTA+ by adding classic games like GTA: The Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar Games has silently increased the cost of its GTA Online-focused subscription service, GTA+. This unannounced price adjustment is likely to further disappoint players who were already critical of the service.

GTA+ was launched in March 2022 as a membership program exclusively for Grand Theft Auto Online players on the latest consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The service offers monthly in-game perks and persistent benefits for all members. These perks include free cosmetics, bonus in-game currency, discounts on vehicles and weapons, faster taxi services, exclusive locations, and member-only Shark Cards. The introduction of this service has not been well-received by many fans, primarily due to the continued monetization of an aging game like Grand Theft Auto 5. Now, Rockstar has decided to raise the price of the divisive service.

As reported by Rockstar Intel, GTA+ will cost an additional $2 USD per month on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. This results in a new monthly price of $7.99, up from the initial $5.99. The increased price will take effect on June 11, 2024, without any official communication or justification from Rockstar Games, being only observed on the official Xbox and PlayStation stores.

Rockstar Expands GTA+ Library with Older Titles

Given the recent trend of subscription service price hikes, the GTA+ increase shouldn't come as a complete surprise. Shortly before this adjustment, EA announced a similar price increase for EA Play. In 2023, Microsoft and Sony raised prices for their subscription services, Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, by up to 35%. Notably, Ubisoft and Nintendo have yet to announce increases for their services in the past year.

Despite the backlash over the price hike, Rockstar has been enhancing the value of GTA+ by adding classic titles. Games like Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, GTA: Liberty City Stories, GTA: Chinatown Wars, and Red Dead Redemption have been integrated into the service, with L.A. Noire and Bully set to join later this year. While fans may criticize the increased cost, the addition of these titles alongside existing Grand Theft Auto Online benefits might persuade some to continue their memberships.
