Highlights

  • The original Erangel map is reintroduced to PUBG in May, featuring classic in-game UI and other vintage elements.
  • PUBG Studios is focusing on reimagining existing maps to offer fresh in-game experiences, hinting at more throwback maps in the future.
  • Erangel Classic introduces gameplay tweaks like reduced weapon recoil, longer enemy knockdown time, and unique weather conditions for a limited period.

PUBG enthusiasts can rejoice as PUBG Studios has disclosed that the original Erangel map will be making a comeback to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds this May. The retro version of the PUBG map will transport players down memory lane with its classic in-game UI and more.

The 2024 roadmap of PUBG hinted at this development when it mentioned PUBG Studios' plan to 'reimagine existing worlds' to offer novel in-game encounters. This seems to be a key focus for the developers this year, implying that additional PUBG maps might receive throwback versions or updates similar to the 7th Anniversary Erangel map launched in March. Luckily, gamers won't have to wait long for the next revamped map to arrive.

From May 14 to May 28 on PC and May 23 to June 6 on consoles, players can dive into Erangel Classic. During this period, the Classic version of the map will replace the current Erangel map in Normal Match mode. Erangel Classic will feature various nostalgic elements like foggy and rainy weather, starting island weapon benches, and the original UI components such as the minimap, worldmap, font, and graphics. The gameplay will also see significant adjustments, including reduced weapon recoil and extended enemy knockdown time, reminiscent of PUBG's early days. Moreover, the Tommy Gun will now be found in care packages, while clothing and helmets will spawn on the ground.

Reliving the OG Erangel Experience

Full patch notes detailing all changes to the map will be released by PUBG Studios on May 13. Following the announcement, fans clamored for the return of PUBG's starting island voice chat, a feature that has not been confirmed by the developers yet. Although only speculation, it appears that PUBG Studios may have already unveiled all the major modifications coming with Erangel Classic.

In a recent update in April, PUBG introduced a groundbreaking feature of destructible terrain, currently exclusive to Rondo. Players can now alter the environment using tools like the pickaxe, adding a strategic dimension to the battle royale.

Looking ahead, PUBG's 2024 roadmap also emphasizes enhancing the game's anti-cheat system. In 2023, PUBG Studios banned over 3 million cheaters, marking a 33% increase from the previous year. The developer aims to further bolster its cheat detection capabilities by integrating machine-learning technology into its anti-cheat system. This advanced tech is particularly adept at identifying prevalent cheats like aimbots and ESPs, ensuring a fair gaming environment for all players.
