Originally unveiled at Ubisoft Forward in 2020, the Sands of Time remake encountered numerous hurdles early on. Initially entrusted to Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, the project faced intense backlash following its initial trailer release. Consequently, Ubisoft Montreal, the original creators of Sands of Time, took back control, aiming to restore the remake's integrity. With no confirmed release date, the Montreal team opted to start afresh, discarding prior work and initiating a ground-up reconstruction of the game.

Insider Gaming reports indicate that Ubisoft Montreal has chosen to abandon the previous build of the Sands of Time remake by Pune and Mumbai studios, opting for a brand-new approach. Despite expectations to build upon existing foundations, the new developers opted for a complete overhaul. Leaked footage exposes missing textures, indicating an early development stage and significant time until completion.

Furthermore, the remake has undergone a complete rewriting and motion-capture process. The revised version embraces a more realistic style, boasting enhanced graphics, animations, and mechanics. Surprisingly, lead voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, known for voicing Spider-Man in Marvel's Spider-Man games, will not reprise his role as the Prince.
