An ongoing event in Pokemon GO is leaving many players dissatisfied with the current offerings. The Special Research tasks in the game's Rediscover campaign are receiving mixed reviews, with some finding them lackluster.

Initially released nearly eight years ago, Pokemon GO gained immense popularity as one of the pioneering successful augmented reality games, encouraging players to explore the real world to discover and capture Pokemon. Despite maintaining a strong player base, developer Niantic introduced a new campaign called Rediscover GO to rekindle interest among former players by revisiting the game's origins, focusing on the original 151 Pokemon. The Rediscover Kanto segment of this campaign commenced on April 17 and will conclude on May 7.

While two of the three Special Research tasks in Rediscover Kanto are relatively standard, involving the use of 151 berries while catching Pokemon and earning 15,100 Stardust, the final task appears daunting, requiring players to capture all 151 Kanto Pokemon. However, some players on Reddit have highlighted that this does not necessarily mean capturing one of each Kanto Pokemon type, leading to a sense of monotony and insufficient challenge. This has left some players feeling disheartened, prompting suggestions of self-imposed challenges like capturing every Kanto Pokemon sequentially. A Reddit user, elspotto, remarked, "I was expecting to catch the entire Kanto dex again, so I'm fine with any other task!"

Differing Player Sentiments Towards Rediscover Kanto

While criticism abounds regarding the Special Research tasks, not all players share the sentiment. Some players value the substantial XP rewards granted for task completion — 15,100 XP for each task — facilitating rank progression, particularly when combined with the XP multiplier boost from a Lucky Egg. Additionally, players receive an Incubator and 10,000 Stardust upon finishing the final task set. Despite initial complaints about the event on Reddit, the original poster later expressed satisfaction at the opportunity to capture previously-missed Kanto Pokemon from the game's early stages.

The controversial avatar changes introduced on April 17 as part of the Rediscover Yourself Update have further divided the player base. These alterations, which include shorter necks and less distinct body features, have predominantly elicited negative feedback from vocal fans. However, some positive feedback has emerged due to the expanded range of skin tones now available for avatars.
