Farewell to World of Demons: PlatinumGames Title to Permanently Close on February 1

Highlights

  • World of Demons, an Apple Arcade exclusive, will be permanently inaccessible to players after February 1.
  • Despite being a mobile game, World of Demons captivated players with its distinctive art style and action-packed battles.
  • PlatinumGames' other titles have also faced similar fates, either being delisted or permanently shut down, limiting fans' access to their entire game library.

World of Demons, an exclusive hack-and-slash game by PlatinumGames available on Apple Arcade, is set to permanently close its doors on February 1. The game was introduced in 2021 and received predominantly positive feedback, standing out as one of the top Apple Arcade exclusives.

PlatinumGames is renowned for its unique art styles and dynamic combat, and World of Demons epitomizes these qualities. Featuring cel-shaded graphics, the game allows players to collect yokai for action-packed battles. While the game's touch screen limitations on iOS may have restricted its depth, it still left a strong impression as a mobile gaming experience.

Regrettably, time is running out for fans wishing to experience World of Demons firsthand. Starting January 18, the game will no longer be available for download on Apple Arcade. Subsequently, on February 1, even those who have previously downloaded the game will be unable to play it. Given that World of Demons lacks substantial online elements, the necessity of its shutdown remains unclear, but it is indeed scheduled for February 1.

Closure Timeline

  • World of Demons will be removed from Apple Arcade on January 18
  • The game will become unplayable on February 1, regardless of prior downloads

The closure of a title from acclaimed developer PlatinumGames is undoubtedly disheartening. This, however, is not the first instance of a PlatinumGames-developed title meeting such a fate. Babylon's Fall faced a similar outcome, proving to be a commercial failure as a live service game published by Square Enix. The shutdown of Babylon's Fall had already made it impossible to access Platinum's entire game library, but the closure of World of Demons, being a single-player, non-live service game, adds to the disappointment.

While several of Platinum's other titles have not been permanently shut down, they have posed challenges for players after being delisted. Over the years, various PlatinumGames titles, including 2014's The Legend of Korra, 2015's Transformers: Devastation, and 2016's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, have been delisted. Although not as devastating as a permanent shutdown, delisting games still obstructs gamers' access to them.

Although improbable, there remains a slim chance of World of Demons making a return in some form. Platinum has previously remastered and re-released its games, such as The Wonderful 101: Remastered, but there are no guarantees of the same happening for World of Demons. It goes without saying that individuals interested in playing the game should promptly download it from Apple Arcade and make the most of it before its permanent shutdown on February 1.
