Being the franchise's primary mascot, Pikachu comes in numerous versions in Pokemon GO. In addition to the standard electric mouse Pokemon, Niantic frequently introduces new Pikachu variants for seasonal events. Through various promotions, more than sixty Pikachu variations have been offered, often sporting different hats or costumes. This over-reliance on Pikachu is becoming a point of contention among players.

A Reddit post by user TheLastStoryTold highlights the weariness among Pokemon GO players regarding the surplus of Pikachu variants. Many players admit their lack of interest in these special Pikachus, as they cannot evolve into Raichu like the regular Pikachu. Some players avoid capturing new Pikachu versions to prevent cluttering their in-game inventory. Suggestions for new variant Pokemon range from outfits for other Pokemon to Mimikyu wearing Pikachu hats.

Concerns about the excessive number of alternate Pikachus in Pokemon GO come after the addition of yet another Pikachu variant to the game. In collaboration with the Pokemon Horizons anime, Niantic introduced a Pikachu sporting Cap's Hat from the latest Pokemon series. This crossover event also brought new features to the photo mode, including photo-bombs by Pokemon Horizons characters Liko and Roy. Like many other variants, Captain's Cap Pikachu cannot evolve into Raichu within Pokemon GO.
