Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Fallout TV series

Joshua Sawyer, known for his work on Fallout: New Vegas, recently shared his perspective on the new Fallout TV series by Amazon. Before joining Obsidian Entertainment, Sawyer was part of Black Isle Studios, contributing to the Icewind Dale franchise. His most recent project, Pentiment, a critically acclaimed 2D historical narrative adventure game, was released on Xbox Game Pass in 2022.

Amazon's highly anticipated Fallout TV series premiered on Prime Video a few weeks ago, receiving praise as one of the best video game adaptations. The show's success has reignited interest in the Fallout games, with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 experiencing a resurgence in player numbers. Despite the buzz, some fans have raised concerns about a scene in the Mojave Wasteland possibly altering the lore of Fallout: New Vegas. Todd Howard, the franchise director, reassured fans that New Vegas remains canon in the Fallout universe.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Sawyer expressed his indifference towards the fate of New Vegas in future Fallout projects, stating, "...whatever happens with it, I don't care...My attitude towards properties that I work on, and even characters I create, is that I don't own any of this stuff. It was never mine. And the thing that I made is what I made."

Josh Sawyer's Stance on Fallout: New Vegas in the Fallout Universe

Despite his significant contributions to the gaming industry, Sawyer's detached approach towards his creations may surprise fans. He clarified that his detachment stems from a desire to maintain a healthy perspective on projects beyond his control.

With anticipation building around the Fallout franchise, many fans hope to see Obsidian revisiting the series, especially since Fallout 5 from Bethesda Game Studios is not expected until around 2030. Whether Sawyer would be interested in returning to the Fallout universe or focusing on smaller projects like Pentiment remains uncertain.

Following the successful launch of the Fallout series, a second season has been confirmed. For fans of Obsidian, the upcoming release of Avowed is eagerly anticipated later this year. More details about this fantasy RPG, including its launch date, are expected at Xbox's June showcase. Additionally, Obsidian is working on a sequel to the 2019 sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds, although updates have been scarce in recent years.
