NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Sees Price Reduction

The flagship Nvidia GPU, RTX 4090, is now more affordable after a period of high pricing.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Sees Price Reduction

Highlights

  • The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 now has a reduced MSRP below $1,899, making it more accessible to consumers.
  • Global price increases were triggered by US government export restrictions on certain semiconductors, including the RTX 4090.
  • Although the price has dropped, the RTX 4090 remains pricier than its original launch cost, yet it remains a top-tier graphics card.

Having been sold at exorbitant prices for an extended period, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card has now been priced below $1,899, slightly above its initial launch price. Despite its late 2022 release, this top-tier Nvidia GPU has faced challenges from both scalpers and US authorities for varied reasons.

In November 2023, the US government imposed restrictions on certain international semiconductor exports, which included the RTX 4090, citing national security concerns. These restrictions prohibited exports to several countries. To navigate the export limitations imposed by the Biden administration, Nvidia decided to produce a separate product, the RTX 4090D, exclusively in China. Although Nvidia claimed the export restrictions would not significantly impact its finances in the short term, they led to a global price surge for the RTX 4090.

The RTX 4090 Now Priced Below $2,000

Fortunately, prices for the RTX 4090 seem to be stabilizing in some regions. According to data from 3DCenter in Germany, the RTX 4090's price in Europe dropped to €1,850 in February. Similarly, the US saw a price decline, with the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition available on Amazon for $1,819. On Newegg, the same card was priced at $1,849 after applying a promo code to get $50 off the $1,899 MSRP.

Despite the price reduction being a relief for potential buyers, the current price of the RTX 4090 still exceeds the $1,599 MSRP it had at launch in October 2022. Some RTX 4090 GPUs are priced closer to $2,000 before additional costs, including refurbished and open-box models from Gigabyte, which recently issued revisions due to PCB issues.

Despite its high cost, the features and power of Nvidia's leading GPU make it the top choice for gamers. It remains to be seen if other RTX 4090 manufacturers will follow suit in providing relief to PC gamers seeking high-end hardware.
