Nvidia's GeForce Now Free Tier to Include Ads Soon

Highlights

  • Starting February 28, free GeForce Now users will see ads to help cover costs.
  • The addition of ads is anticipated to decrease wait times for users in general.
  • Paid subscribers to GeForce Now's premium tiers will not encounter ads.

On February 28, ads will become visible to free users of Nvidia's GeForce Now. The cloud gaming service, which launched in 2020, offers an alternative for individuals lacking high-performance gaming setups but still seeking to enjoy games at maximum settings. With a library of nearly 2,000 games encompassing indie to AAA titles across various genres.

GeForce Now provides three subscription levels, with the basic tier being free. While the premium tiers underwent a price increase in Canada and the EU in October 2023, users in the US should still find the service cost-effective. The top-tier subscription, priced at $19.99 per month, grants access to RTX 4080 graphics, 4K resolution, up to 120 FPS, and an eight-hour session limit. Free users, however, are restricted to one-hour sessions, basic hardware specs, and at times need to wait in lengthy queues before playing.

According to The Verge, commencing February 28, free GeForce Now users will encounter up to two minutes of ads while queuing for a game. The aim is to offset expenses associated with the free service and eventually reduce wait times for free users, as mentioned by Nvidia spokesperson Stephanie Ngo. These ads will not disrupt gameplay and are intended to be minimally intrusive. Paid subscribers to GeForce Now's premium tiers will be ad-free.

Selection of Games on GeForce Now - February 2024

Since its inception four years ago, Nvidia's GeForce Now has continually enhanced its streaming quality and game library for subscribers. Unlike Google Stadia, GeForce Now does not require users to purchase games exclusively for the platform, enabling them to access titles already owned on platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and EA.

Following the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal in June 2023, it was revealed that Game Pass would be integrated into Nvidia's platform. Subsequently, in August, 19 Xbox Game Pass games were introduced to GeForce Now, with popular titles such as Starfield, Forza Horizon 5, Remnant 2, and No Man's Sky now available to users through the service.
