Highlights

  • Nintendo is discontinuing repairs for New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and 2DS consoles in Japan once spare parts are depleted, urging users to act promptly for fixes.
  • After spare parts run out, 3DS users seeking repairs will have to resort to third-party solutions, posing potential risks. The timeline for Nintendo exhausting 3DS parts remains uncertain.
  • The closure of online services for 3DS and Wii U consoles is set for April 8, with users having until March 11 to transfer remaining eShop points.

In an official statement, Nintendo has revealed that repair services for 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) systems in Japan will be halted once the company depletes its stock of necessary components. Although no specific deadline has been provided for the exhaustion of these parts, Nintendo advises users requiring repairs to act swiftly.

This decision is part of Nintendo's broader plan to discontinue online services for the 3DS and Wii U consoles. The termination is scheduled for approximately 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time on April 8, with users given until 10 p.m. Pacific Time on March 11 to finalize any pending eShop point transfers. Currently, only Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter are expected to remain functional post-April 8, with The Pokemon Company recommending users to promptly transition Pokemon from Pokemon Bank to Pokemon Home.

Nintendo Halting Repairs for Specific 3DS Models

Aside from losing online capabilities, certain Nintendo 3DS users in Japan will soon lose the option for official repairs on their devices. In an announcement on social media (translated by Twitter user OatmealDome), Nintendo disclosed the discontinuation of repair services for New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS LL (known as New Nintendo 3DS XL internationally), and Nintendo 2DS systems in Japan due to dwindling part availability necessary for repairs. Earlier in 2021, Nintendo had announced the cessation of repairs for the original Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL models for similar reasons.

This recent development from Nintendo comes nearly a year after the global closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Once Nintendo exhausts its part inventory, 3DS users seeking repairs will need to explore third-party solutions, all of which carry inherent risks. While Nintendo has not specified the timeline for running out of essential parts, it urges users in need of official repairs to contact the company promptly.

As Nintendo focuses on supporting the Switch and its rumored successor, older consoles are facing a decline in essential functionalities and assistance. The exact depletion date of Nintendo's 3DS parts remains uncertain.
