Ever since its launch in November 2022, the Studio Ghibli theme park in Aichi, Japan has been steadily growing, introducing new attractions inspired by the studio's iconic films. Each themed area immerses visitors in the world of beloved Studio Ghibli movies, allowing fans to live out their cinematic fantasies. The latest addition that has generated immense excitement is the unveiling of the Catbus.

Last week, the first images and videos of the real-life Catbus were released, with the buses scheduled to start operating on March 16, 2024, at the theme park. The Catbuses not only exceed our cuteness expectations but also provide a practical mode of transportation within the vast park. Let's delve into the details of this highly anticipated addition and why it has captured the hearts of fans.

The Significance of the Catbus in Pop Culture

While opinions may vary among Studio Ghibli enthusiasts regarding the best movie, a visit to Japan quickly reveals the most iconic one. My Neighbor Totoro, released in 1988, remains a favorite in Japan and globally. Totoro even graces the Studio Ghibli logo, marking the film that propelled the studio to fame.

Bringing elements of My Neighbor Totoro to life never fails to spark joy, with numerous giant Totoro statues scattered across Japan. Among the film's memorable characters is the Catbus, a large feline-shaped bus that magically transports Satsuki and Mei through the forest. Watching the movie, one can't help but whimsically envision riding the Catbus themselves.

Previously, the only way for Totoro fans to get a taste of a real Catbus was at the Studio Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, where a model Catbus is on display for exploration (photography prohibited). Initially designed for children, a larger version was introduced in 2016 to accommodate adult passengers. Now, the new Catbus offers everyone the chance to experience a ride on the iconic bus in an outdoor setting, with an actual destination in mind.

The Catbus Experience

The Catbus will traverse between five themed areas of the Studio Ghibli Theme Park: Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Hill of Youth, Dondoko Forest, Mononoke Village, and Valley of Witches. Crafted by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki, the Catbus fulfills the long-held desire of fans to ride a real-life version. Manufactured by Toyota and Monet Technologies, the Catbuses boast six cozy seats with soft, fur-like upholstery resembling the original Catbus. The eyes of the Catbus illuminate akin to real headlights.

Connecting Mononoke Village and Dondoko Village, the Catbus ride lasts approximately ten minutes. Besides providing fans with a dreamy experience, the Catbuses enhance the park's accessibility for individuals with disabilities, elderly visitors, and expectant mothers. The buses can be easily modified to accommodate wheelchairs. Adult tickets for the Catbus ride are priced at 1,000 yen (USD $6.65), while children can ride for 500 yen (USD $3). Each passenger receives a souvenir illustration of the Catbus by Hayao Miyazaki, featuring a park map drawn by Goro on the reverse side.
