The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York recently unveiled its nominees for the World Video Game Hall of Fame, with Neopets from 1999 potentially joining the prestigious list in 2024, as the game approaches its 25th anniversary.

Following its separation from NetDragon, Neopets has experienced a revival, attracting more players and resurrecting classic minigames through reconstruction and Flash emulation. In celebration of its upcoming milestone, the game is set to launch two new mobile games and a card game in collaboration with Upper Deck. This resurgence has brought attention to the game's enduring legacy.

Recognition in the Video Game Hall of Fame

During an interview with Game Rant, CEO Dominic Law shared his initial reaction to Neopets' nomination.

Neopets faces competition from 11 other gaming titans, including Metroid, SimCity, Resident Evil, and Ultima, among others. The final selection, typically comprising four games, will be revealed on May 9 at the ESL Digital Worlds Exhibit, following a voting process involving experts assessing each title's cultural impact.

Law emphasizes the game's historical significance, describing it as a cherished artifact from the early internet era, meticulously restored by his dedicated team. The rebuilding of iconic Flash minigames and the preservation of player data serve as a nostalgic tribute to past users.

He views Neopets' recent rejuvenation as a monumental endeavor, supported by the launch of new mobile and card games in partnership with Upper Deck. This strategic revitalization could enhance the game's chances of induction into the Hall of Fame, alongside esteemed titles like Pong and Final Fantasy 7. For Law, the personal connection to Neopets further amplifies its significance.

A Personal Legacy for Neopets' CEO

Law's early exposure to Neopets in a pre-digital age shaped his perception of the game's impact, fostering a sense of global connectivity during his formative years. The game's popularity in Hong Kong later solidified his affinity for it, elevating his social status among peers and deepening his attachment to the virtual world.

Reflecting on his journey from a player to the CEO of Neopets, Law acknowledges the pivotal role the game played in his career trajectory. Steering the game's transition to an independent entity marked a turning point, steering away from NFT ventures towards a successful revival strategy.
