Following a significant dip in popularity last year, MultiVersus is slated to stage a comeback in 2024. With ample time to refine the game, developer Player First Games aims to reintroduce MultiVersus with a bang.

Initially launched in open beta in July 2022, MultiVersus garnered massive attention and acclaim from numerous content creators. However, its appeal waned in 2023, leading to a staggering 99% decline in player engagement on Steam by the closure of the open beta in June 2023. The game is now set to relaunch on May 28, 2024, packed with a plethora of enticing new features.

Exciting Updates Unveiled for MultiVersus' Revival

New Additions: Stages, Characters, and Character Enhancements

MultiVersus game director Tony Hyuh, in a 'Road to Launch' developer update video on the MultiVersus YouTube channel, teased the upcoming changes. The video not only confirmed the arrival of new stages but also showcased concept art for them. Among the revealed stages were Townsville Hall from The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory, paying homage to Cartoon Network's 90s classics.

Furthermore, the relaunch will introduce new characters to the game, although specific characters are yet to be disclosed. With a diverse range of franchises from Warner Bros. at its disposal, fans are eager to witness the lineup for MultiVersus' revival. Hyuh also hinted at fresh attacks and moves for characters in a bid to simplify the gameplay, addressing the complexity that deterred some players, particularly with newer character additions. This move aims to ensure the game's longevity, potentially through streamlined gameplay mechanics or expanded customization options.

Enhanced Visuals and Matchmaking

In the same video, Hyuh announced the transition to Unreal Engine 5 for MultiVersus, showcasing improved lighting and detailing through a comparison of Wonder Woman's renderings pre and post upgrade. While the game already boasted a solid visual appeal, the enhanced detailing is set to elevate its distinctiveness, countering the critique of a generic art style and making MultiVersus stand out upon its return.

Moreover, a crucial step towards fortifying MultiVersus' sustainability involves a complete overhaul of the game's netcode. Hyuh emphasized the adoption of new netcode to ensure consistent and top-tier game performance across all platforms. This strategic enhancement is pivotal for enhancing player retention, especially in the competitive multiplayer landscape, where seamless gameplay experience is paramount for player engagement and loyalty.

Introduction of PvE Mode

In a significant reveal towards the end of the update video, Hyuh disclosed the introduction of a PvE mode in MultiVersus. While details remain scarce, Hyuh hinted at unique rewards and diverse gameplay experiences within this mode. This addition marks a pivotal moment for the game, addressing the absence of single-player content that contributed to the decline of MultiVersus' open beta. By catering to solo players and offering a stable gameplay alternative amidst the dynamic multiplayer environment, the PvE mode aims to inject longevity and sustainability into MultiVersus.
