Why Mortal Kombat's Next Sequel Should Bring Back a Fan-Favorite Feature

Mortal Kombat games are known for shaking things up with each release, and one beloved feature that went missing deserves a comeback.
Why Mortal Kombat's Next Sequel Should Bring Back a Fan-Favorite Feature

Highlights

  • Mortal Kombat 1 introduced new systems like Kameo Fighters but left out the iconic Krypt, a fan-favorite feature.
  • The Krypt in previous games made unlocking content enjoyable with its unique currency system and immersive adventure mode.
  • There's potential for innovation with the Krypt, possibly integrating it with new modes to enrich gameplay in future Mortal Kombat titles.

Mortal Kombat 1 aimed to break away from its predecessors by making significant changes, both obvious and subtle. The refreshed storyline, updated character backgrounds, and the Kameo system were the major updates. However, certain traditional features, like the iconic Krypt, were left behind to make room for Mortal Kombat 1's new systems.

The Krypt had been a staple in almost every MK game from 2002's Deadly Alliance to 2019's MK11. This side mode underwent significant changes over the years and was eventually replaced by MK1's Invasions mode and Shrine. While players can still earn unlockables in these modes, the gameplay experience is vastly different. The next installment in the Mortal Kombat series could learn from its history and potentially revive this lost feature.

Reasons to Bring Back the Krypt in Mortal Kombat

The Krypt Adds Fun to Unlocking Content

When the Krypt debuted in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, it was rudimentary but redefined in-game content shops in fighting games. Being the first Mortal Kombat game developed exclusively for home consoles, Deadly Alliance introduced innovative ways to include additional content not viable in arcades. The introduction of a currency system enhanced the Krypt, enabling players to earn various koins through tower challenges or the new Konquest mode.

Initially resembling a crypt, Mortal Kombat's Krypt featured coffins requiring specific koins for unlocking. Players could spend in-game currency on characters, skins, artwork, videos, and more. Each game expanded the Krypt, turning it into a side game. MK11's Krypt felt like a standalone adventure, far beyond a mere in-game store.

Room for Innovation

Mortal Kombat's Krypt amalgamates key elements into one feature. Earlier games, without DLC, bundled all unlockables at launch from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon. Earning koins and exploring the Krypt was integral, with the thrill of discovering a new character in any unopened coffin.

Despite its evolution, there's space for innovation. While most content now arrives through online stores, reintroducing the Krypt could rejuvenate modern Mortal Kombat. Pairing the Krypt with a revamped Invasions or Konquest mode could bring a fresh twist. It could solely function as a shop, making room for a standalone adventure mode. Alternatively, emulating MK11, a new Krypt could offer a longer journey. Whatever lies ahead for Mortal Kombat, a revitalized Krypt would be a welcome addition.
