While the primary roster of Mortal Kombat 1 comprises modernized iterations of iconic characters within a fresh narrative, the supplementary Kameo fighter lineup features original versions of fighters from previous Mortal Kombat titles, transported through time. These classic incarnations can be summoned to aid players during battles, enriching Mortal Kombat 1 with new strategies and move combinations.

Initially, 15 Kameo fighters were included in the base version of Mortal Kombat 1, with NetherRealm consistently expanding this collection through the ongoing Kombat Pack 1 DLC. Recent additions include Tremor, Khameleon, and Janet Cage – an alternative timeline rendition of the long-standing Mortal Kombat protagonist Johnny Cage. In the original Mortal Kombat lore, Mavado played a pivotal role as a prominent figure in the Red Dragon criminal faction. Introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mavado's quest to eradicate the rogue Black Dragon clan led to a temporary alliance with Shang Tsung. His reappearance in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon saw him fighting alongside Shinnok and the Forces of Darkness in the ultimate showdown against the heroes of the former Mortal Kombat timeline.
