MintRocket, the developer behind the popular game Dave the Diver, has announced its next gaming venture, Wakerunners, a team-based arena battler. This new release marks a departure from their previous pixel-based adventure game, Dave the Diver, which unexpectedly gained widespread popularity upon its launch in mid-2023.

Despite its indie appearance, MintRocket is actually a subsidiary of Nexon, a major South Korean video game publisher. The success of Dave the Diver led to some controversy due to its nomination as Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023, ultimately won by Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars.

MintRocket has introduced two new projects that differ significantly from Dave the Diver. The trailer for Wakerunners has been unveiled, offering a glimpse of the top-down team-based PVP arena battler set in a dystopian sci-fi world. Despite the divergence in style, MintRocket will provide a demo of Wakerunners during Steam Next Fest in early February.

MintRocket's Wakerunners Details

  • Demo available during Steam Fest Next, February 5-12, 2024
  • Platforms: TBD, currently Steam only

According to a PC Gamer interview with MintRocket, the demo will feature seven playable characters and five game modes. The number of players on each team will either be 4 or 5, depending on the game mode, and matches can be expected to last about 10 minutes. Director ChaeHyun Lim emphasized the game's focus on fun with each character, allowing players to switch characters on the fly to adapt to their opponents. Additionally, cosmetic items can be earned or purchased through a battle pass.

MintRocket's second upcoming project, Nakwon: Lost Paradise, is a 16-player third-person PvPvE survival extraction game set in a zombie apocalypse. Players will compete for resources and confront the undead using limited firearms, emphasizing stealth and melee combat. Permadeath awaits those who fail to survive in this challenging environment.
