Media Molecule managed to avoid closure amidst the recent wave of layoffs in the gaming industry. In 2023, around 9,000 individuals across the sector lost their jobs, including some at Media Molecule. The scale of these layoffs was striking, affecting industry giants like Hasbro, EA, and Microsoft. Despite hopes for a better 2024, the industry faced further turmoil.

As the year progressed, the industry saw more layoffs. In January, about 6,000 individuals were laid off, followed by another 2,000 in February. Shockingly, around 900 of these layoffs came from Sony, impacting studios like Naughty Dog and Insomniac, despite the recent success of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Kotaku's senior reporter Ethan Gach revealed that Media Molecule, a British developer, was in danger of closure alongside PlayStation's London Studio during the layoffs. Media Molecule had played a crucial role in defining the PlayStation brand with its popular games. While London Studio faced closure, known for titles like Singstar, EyeToy, and PlayStation Home, Gach's attempts to reach out for more details remain unanswered.

The studio's latest release, Dreams, highlighted the interactive essence of gaming by offering a platform to create and share games, reminiscent of the successful LittleBigPlanet series. Despite facing layoffs after ending live support for Dreams, there was optimism for future projects. However, news of potential closure has cast doubt on the studio's future, especially with looming layoffs.
