Highlights

  • Cities: Skylines 2 is set to introduce mod support on March 25.
  • The beta version of modding tools will include a code and map editor, with asset mods support following later.
  • The game will release its first official asset pack, Beach Properties, and the Deluxe Relax Station DLC on the same day.

Cities: Skylines 2 is gearing up for a major update on March 25, including the introduction of modding support, a fresh asset pack, and a new DLC. This move is expected to elevate the game's replay value and address some long-standing fan concerns.

Originally planned for a simultaneous multi-platform release, Cities: Skylines 2 faced delays for its console ports in September 2023, shortly before their scheduled launch. The PC version, lacking modding support that was a key feature in its predecessor, received criticism from fans.

Beta Modding Support to Include Code and Map Editor

Colossal Order is rectifying this omission by announcing a beta version of the game's mod support, set to debut on March 25. This initial release will feature a code and map editor, a significant step forward considering the studio's acknowledged misstep of not offering mod support from the game's inception.

Asset Mods Support in the Pipeline

Alongside the editing tools, the studio plans to add support for asset pack mods in the future. Those interested in delving into the modding process are encouraged to explore the Cities: Skylines 2 Wiki.

The March 25 update will also unveil Beach Properties, the game's first asset pack, and the Deluxe Relax Station DLC. Beach Properties will introduce 70 new assets, primarily residential buildings, while the audio DLC adds 16 songs and 15 DJ voice tracks, available for $9.99 and $4.99, respectively. Both are included in the $49.99 Expansion Pass: Waterfronts.

The imminent modding tools release will open the doors for user submissions on the Cities: Skylines 2 Paradox Mods platform. Content creators have been testing the editing tools since late 2023. While some fans hoped for Steam Workshop integration for mods, the in-house platform was chosen to extend mod support to console versions.
