The game's development was officially acknowledged in late 2022 during an interview with Hangar 13's General Manager Roman Hladík as part of the franchise's 20th-anniversary celebrations. Although the release is still a few years away, the project seems to be progressing steadily.

Recent reports suggest that Take-Two Interactive might be gearing up to reveal the game soon. The speculation arises from a leak by Kurakasis, who mentioned on Twitter that preparations for a Mafia series announcement are underway. Given that Hangar 13 is currently the sole studio working on a Mafia project, it is highly likely that this announcement pertains to their game.

While the exact timing of the announcement remains uncertain, the leaker hinted that it could happen within the next month. Drawing parallels to the Judas trailer release, which was anticipated three to four weeks prior to its launch, Kurakasis suggests that a similar pattern may apply to this Mafia announcement.

Potential Showcase at Next PlayStation Event

Given Take-Two's history of participating in Sony's major showcases, there's a possibility that the upcoming Mafia announcement could feature at the next PlayStation event. Industry insider Jeff Grubb's recent report hints at a potential PlayStation Showcase in May 2024, where the Silent Hill 2 remake is expected to be showcased, possibly alongside Mafia 4.

Although the fourth Mafia installment's confirmation came in 2022, its development likely began around 2020, following the completion of Mafia: Definitive Edition by Hangar 13. Despite the game nearing a reveal, it is unlikely to be the studio's next release, as TopSpin 2K25 is slated for launch on April 26 for PC and consoles.
