Highlights

  • Lenovo is developing an enhanced Legion GO, offering cutting-edge PC gaming performance in a portable form.
  • Rivals like ASUS are also gearing up to unveil updated models of their gaming handhelds in 2024.
  • Modern PC gaming handhelds now provide the ability to enjoy high-quality, AAA titles, bridging the gap between on-the-go gaming and desktop capabilities.

Tech giant Lenovo is said to be working on a successor to the Lenovo Legion GO, its portable gaming handheld device. Similar to the current Legion GO, the upcoming model will deliver top-notch PC gaming hardware in a compact, portable design.

The Legion GO was initially launched by Lenovo in October 2023. The realm of portable gaming PC handhelds has been expanding rapidly for hardware manufacturers, following the triumph of platforms like the Valve Steam Deck and its array of supported games. In contrast to the Steam Deck, most competitors operate on the Windows OS, ensuring broader compatibility with the majority of PC games.

Lenovo's Progress on the Legion GO Follow-Up

Reports about a new iteration of the Lenovo Legion GO and its distinctive features emerged during Innovate 2024, a trade exhibition held in Thailand. As per statements to VideoCardz.com, Clifford Chong, Lenovo's Gaming Category Manager for APAC, verified that the company is developing "the next generation" of the Legion GO. Chong mentioned that Lenovo will disclose more information at an appropriate time.

While Chong did not delve into specifics regarding the specifications or hardware of the new Lenovo Legion GO, or whether it would retain the same name, he did express Lenovo's belief in the potential of the PC gaming handheld market. He stated that Lenovo is actively enhancing the handheld with the "next wave" of features. Lenovo's presence at Innovate 2024 primarily centered on its range of Chromebooks and laptops, potentially explaining the limited discussion on gaming handheld plans.

The competition is intensifying to cater to the demands of PC gamers seeking both performance and portability. Simultaneously, gaming handhelds offer developers a more consistent set of specifications akin to consoles when optimizing performance and graphics. With current gaming handhelds struggling to keep pace with the latest PC titles, manufacturers are striving to introduce innovative features and hardware to elevate the user experience. Even ASUS and other competitors are poised to introduce successors to their gaming handhelds in 2024.

While traditional PC gaming handhelds were predominantly used for playing low-spec games and running emulators, newer models excel at handling modern, high-quality AAA releases. Although they may not match the raw power of a full-fledged desktop PC, their compact size and portability have revolutionized the landscape of PC gaming.
