Kojima Productions director Hideo Kojima compared his new game OD with his Boktai series of games for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, noting that the new game is "just as different." Originally rumored as "Overdose,” OD is an upcoming horror game developed by Kojima Productions, written by Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele, and published by Xbox Game Studios.

Hideo Kojima announced a partnership between Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios in June 2022 to develop a new game. At the time, Kojima explained that the new game would harness Microsoft's cutting-edge cloud technology. Details regarding this new game were scarce until the official OD reveal trailer was shown at The Game Awards 2023. What's more, Jordan Peele went on stage at the awards show to join Kojima and explain his role in the development of OD. The new horror game will star Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier, but further details about their exact roles were not revealed. However, Kojima reassures fans that OD will be as "experimental" as his previous works, including Death Stranding and Boktai.

Hideo Kojima Compares OD to Boktai from GBA and DS

On Twitter, Kojima acknowledges that he's creating games that "go against the current of the times," with OD being another game that will be "just as different" as his previous games. Specifically, Kojima compares OD to his most experimental game series for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, Boktai. The prolific developer doesn't mention Boktai by its name in the tweet, but he explains Boktai's unique mechanics let players defeat vampires outside their homes by using actual sunlight, which is detected with a built-in solar sensor. In addition, Kojima explains that Boktai's development was met with fierce opposition from its staff and the company, likely referring to higher-ups at Konami.

Kojima also references the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding franchises in the same tweet, describing the titles as "hide-and-seek" games and "delivery games" respectively. Unfortunately, Kojima didn't elaborate on gameplay or story elements for OD. Kojima's new game will likely be shrouded in mystery for some time, as Kojima Productions continues development of Death Stranding 2 and OD in 2024.

The comparison to Boktai may suggest that OD will have a defining gameplay feature that makes it stand out from past Kojima Productions-developed games. At the very least, OD aims to be a memorable horror title once it's finally available, since Jordan Peele and Hideo Kojima are sharing creative duties for the game's story.

Rumors suggest that OD could have multiplayer survival elements, so players may need to band together in order to progress through certain content. Speculation about OD’s gameplay and story will likely continue well into 2024, as fans eagerly await more official information from Kojima Productions.
