Fortnite Shakes Up Locker System with Major Change

Highlights

  • Update v29.20 eliminates cosmetic item rarities, shifting the focus to series like Gaming Legends and Marvel.
  • Players can no longer categorize cosmetics based on traditional rarities, leading to confusion and discontent.
  • This alteration follows previous updates where rarity backgrounds were stripped from the locker, signaling a shift in design approach.

The highly anticipated v29.20 update brought a plethora of new content to Fortnite. However, fans were left in shock as Epic Games decided to do away with the traditional rarity system for cosmetic items. Initially, Fortnite only featured Save the World mode, with the Battle Royale mode introducing the tier system inspired by the original rarities in Save the World.

In Fortnite, items and cosmetics share common rarities like Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Additionally, items can also be classified as Common, Exotic, or Mythic. Some cosmetics, however, do not adhere to these conventional rarities but are part of exclusive series like Gaming Legends, Marvel, or Slurp, catering to specific themes or collaborations.

The tier system, a staple in Fortnite since its inception in 2017, was abruptly removed on April 9, 2024, with the introduction of update v29.20. While this update brought exciting content such as the Avatar: The Last Airbender skins, it also marked the removal of color-based rarities from the locker and Item Shop. Consequently, players can no longer label skins as Epic or Legendary; only the cosmetic series tags remain.

The removal of traditional rarities has sparked frustration among players, making it challenging to navigate the Fortnite locker and locate specific cosmetics. Additionally, determining the price of a cosmetic based on its color rarity has become more convoluted. Previously, pricing was straightforward - a Legendary/Yellow skin cost 2,000 V-Bucks, while an Uncommon/Green skin cost 800 V-Bucks. With the absence of rarity indicators, prices now fluctuate widely regardless of the complexity of the cosmetic.

This alteration is not the first unpopular change Epic Games has made to the locker. In early December 2023, the removal of rarity backgrounds stirred discontent among fans, hinting at a broader shift in design philosophy that culminated in the elimination of cosmetic rarities.
