For Honor, known for its intense battles between Samurai, Vikings, and European knights, has maintained its reputation as one of the top medieval fighting games since its release in 2017. Despite approaching its seventh anniversary, the game continues to receive regular content updates, captivating a dedicated player base. The new Hero will make an appearance in the second part of the game’s Year 7, Season 4 update, which revolves around a Viking tale of Treason and Betrayal.

The official trailer provides a glimpse of the surprise new Hero. The Varangian Guard, equipped with a large kite shield and one-handed ax, charges into battle with a bloodcurdling war cry, joining the Vikings as the 33rd playable Hero in For Honor’s diverse roster.

Discovering the Varangian Guard

  • Derived from the historical bodyguards of the Byzantine Emperors, the Varangian Guard is a heavily armored Viking warrior influenced by a fusion of Norse and Byzantine cultures.
  • Ubisoft has announced the arrival of this heavily armored new Hero to the game on Feb 1.
  • To learn more about the Varangian Guard, fans can tune in to the Warrior’s Den livestream at twitch.tv/forhonorgame on Jan 25, 12 pm EST.

Hailing from Scandinavia and the Rus, these elite warriors historically served as the personal bodyguards of the Byzantine Emperors between the 10th and 14th centuries. Renowned for their ferocity in battle and unwavering loyalty to the Emperor, the Varangian Guards turned the tide of many battles. The Hero's design in the trailer is inspired by this unlikely fusion of Norse and Byzantine cultures, with the Hero’s lamellar-styled armor and plumed helmet contrasting the traditional Viking weaponry.

True to their real-world counterparts, For Honor’s Varangian Guards will be heavily armored killing machines, distinct from their lightly armored Viking counterparts. Although the Hero’s abilities have not yet been revealed, the Varangian Guard’s role as the Viking faction's only fully armored warrior suggests a more balanced and defensive playstyle compared to their more agile and heavily armed Viking compatriots. A detailed breakdown of the new fighter will be available during Ubisoft’s Warrior’s Den livestream at twitch.tv/forhonorgame on Jan 25, 12 pm EST. Fans will soon have the chance to test the Varangian Guard firsthand on February 1.
