Analyzing Character Roles in Final Fantasy 16's Rising Tide DLC

Highlights

  • Joshua and Jill's roles in The Rising Tide DLC
  • Comparison of character development in the DLC
  • Impact of new character introductions on existing character arcs

Nearly a year post-release, the Final Fantasy 16's Rising Tide DLC has enriched the base game with extended narratives and fresh content. The DLC introduces an original story, new abilities for Clive inspired by Eikon Leviathan, and a range of side quests offering valuable crafting materials. A standout feature is the exhilarating boss battle with Leviathan, showcasing the game's prowess in delivering engaging boss fights.

The Rising Tide DLC presents a refreshing shift for the somber and mature Final Fantasy 16 by transporting players to the vibrant island of Mysidia in the Northern Territories. This lush locale teems with life and houses the modest 'Motes of Water' community in the village of Haven. While the DLC injects new life into the game and provides ample reasons for players to return, it falls short in certain aspects, notably in the handling of characters like Joshua and Jill.

Reevaluating Joshua and Jill's Roles in The Rising Tide

The Neglected Character Arcs of Joshua and Jill

Joshua and Jill, pivotal figures in Clive Rosfield's inner circle, receive inadequate attention in The Rising Tide DLC. Joshua, Clive's brother and a driving force in the base game, is oddly sidelined during the DLC's events, remaining conspicuously inactive in the village of Haven instead of accompanying Clive and the newcomer, Shula, on their journey. This decision seems perplexing, given Joshua's initial presence in Mysidia alongside Clive.

While Jill plays a more visible role than Joshua in The Rising Tide, her character arc remains unfulfilled. Despite being integral to the base game as the Dominant of the Eikon Shiva, Jill is relegated to the background once Clive and Joshua reunite in the main storyline of Final Fantasy 16. The DLC had the opportunity to rectify this oversight, but Jill is once again relegated to a secondary position to make room for Shula. Her potential remains untapped, mirroring the base game's treatment of her character.

Despite its overall strengths, The Rising Tide misses a chance to showcase Joshua and Jill's characters more prominently. A deeper exploration of their dynamics, particularly the relationship between Joshua and Clive, could have added depth to the DLC's narrative. Similarly, giving Jill a more substantial role throughout the story would have enriched the gameplay experience. Nonetheless, The Rising Tide stands out as a commendable expansion to Final Fantasy 16 despite these shortcomings.
