Rumored: Disney's Cost-Cutting Measures Impact Marvel Sequels

Highlights

  • Marvel Studios reportedly scraps sequels for Eternals, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel amidst Disney's cost-saving efforts.
  • Rumors suggest Kevin Feige desired an Eternals sequel, but Disney's CEO Bob Iger doubts its box office success.
  • Following underperforming MCU movies like The Marvels and Ant-Man 3, the studio shifts focus to more established franchises.

MarvelStudios has decided not to proceed with sequels for three major MCU franchises as part of Disney's cost-cutting measures.

Reports indicate significant changes in Marvel Studios' superhero movie lineup. While speculation hinted at a sequel for Eternals being in the works, no official confirmation has been provided. Similarly, talks about new installments for Ant-Man and Captain Marvel have surfaced without any green light. However, recent statements from Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger reveal a reduction in Marvel output with a renewed emphasis on established franchises.

Renowned insider Daniel Richtman claims that anticipated sequels for Eternals, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel are now off the table. Although Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige expressed interest in an Eternals sequel, Iger's skepticism about its commercial success has led to its cancellation. Consequently, projects like Ant-Man 4 and Captain Marvel 3 are also shelved as Disney opts for safer bets over risky ventures.

While Phase 5 of Marvel Studios was anticipated to include numerous sequels, recent box office performances have been lackluster. For instance, The Marvels failed to meet financial expectations, grossing only $206 million globally. With a production budget of $274.8 million, it marked the MCU's weakest opening weekend and lowest-grossing film to date. Given the financial setback, the likelihood of another Captain Marvel movie is slim. Similarly, Ant-Man 3 fell short at the box office, failing to surpass its predecessors' success, making a continuation with Ant-Man 4 improbable.

Eternals introduced a new ensemble of superheroes, including Thena (Angelina Jolie), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), and others, marking Marvel Studios' ambitious project post-The Avengers. Despite high expectations, the film faced mixed reviews and controversies, contributing to its uncertain sequel status.

The inclusion of sensitive themes in Eternals, such as the first openly gay main character and a controversial sex scene, raised concerns among audiences, especially families with young viewers. These factors, coupled with Disney's risk-averse approach, likely influenced the decision to forego an Eternals 2 release.

Marvel Studios movies can be streamed on Disney Plus.
