The publisher of Lords of the Fallen, CI Games, has recently announced the layoff of 10% of its entire team, continuing a trend of game industry layoffs that have been making headlines. Despite the commercial success of its latest game, the company is moving forward with this decision.

CI Games’ latest release, Lords of the Fallen, achieved significant commercial success, selling over one million copies in just 10 days. This marked a substantial improvement compared to the previous installment, which took seven months to reach 900,000 units sold. However, despite this achievement, the company has made the decision to lay off employees.

Reports indicate that around 10% of CI Games' staff has been dismissed, with the majority of the layoffs affecting the company’s marketing department. Marek Tymiński, the CEO of CI Games, explained that the layoffs were necessary to ensure the business's strength and stability.

It remains uncertain how these layoffs will impact the development of CI Games' upcoming projects. The company is reportedly working on a sequel to Lords of the Fallen, potentially set for release around 2026, according to recent leaks.

The layoffs at CI Games are part of an unfortunate trend in the gaming industry. In the past year, major companies such as BioWare, Take-Two Interactive, CD Projekt Red, ByteDance, and Embracer Group collectively laid off thousands of employees.

Furthermore, CI Games is not the only company to implement layoffs this year. Last week, Unity announced a 25% staff reduction, affecting around 1,800 employees, which will significantly impact its operations. Prior to this, Unity had already laid off over 1,100 people between 2022 and 2023. These developments raise concerns that more layoffs may occur in the gaming industry throughout 2024.
