The creators of Celeste have unveiled a spin-off game to celebrate the sixth anniversary of the beloved platformer, and it's completely free. This remarkable project, complete with its own soundtrack, was initially intended as a joke, as revealed by one of the developers.
Celeste achieved tremendous success following its release on January 26, 2018. Almost every aspect of the 2D indie game garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and casual gamers. Although the team behind Celeste, Extremely OK Games, is currently focused on their new game, Earthblade, they continue to dedicate time to producing content for their previous creation.
On January 29, Extremely OK Games launched Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain, a free 3D platformer developed in under two weeks to honor Celeste's sixth anniversary. This spin-off offers fans the chance to re-experience the challenging journey featured in Celeste, which is widely regarded as one of the finest platformer games of all time. At present, Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain is only available on PC and Linux, with a macOS version in the pipeline, as announced by Extremely OK Games.
It's evident that Extremely OK Games invested significant effort into creating and releasing Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain. The title features a captivating soundtrack composed by Lena Raine, the lead composer of Celeste, renowned for creating some of the best musical themes in Minecraft, among other accomplishments. Similar to any other game release, Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain received a day one patch to address various issues.

This isn't the first time Extremely OK Games has unveiled something special to commemorate a Celeste milestone. In 2021, they released Celeste Classic 2 for Celeste's third anniversary, serving as a sequel to the original PICO-8 version of Celeste created in 2015. While a genuine Celeste sequel may never materialize, as co-founder Madeline Thorson expressed disinterest in such a project in a previous interview.
Fans of Celeste will be pleased to learn that gameplay footage of Earthblade, unveiled at The Game Awards 2022, indicates that the upcoming title will share similarities with its predecessor. Following delays, Extremely OK Games is scheduled to launch Earthblade in 2024.
