Highlights

  • Capcom is exploring the revival of some of its long-forgotten franchises.
  • A recent survey asked fans if they would like to see IPs such as Breath of Fire, Darkstalkers, Dino Crisis, Okami, and Onimusha get remakes, sequels, or both.
  • The company's ongoing remaking efforts have sparked hope among fans for the return of beloved classics.

Capcom has hinted at the possibility of resurrecting a range of its former franchises, including revered titles such as Onimusha, Okami, Dino Crisis, and Breath of Fire, alongside numerous others. This development has ignited optimism among fans, who eagerly anticipate Capcom's continued efforts to breathe new life into its classic titles.

As Capcom approaches its 45th anniversary on May 30, the company's extensive catalog of beloved IPs has come into focus. In recent years, Capcom has delved into this treasure trove by embarking on remakes of cult classics like the Resident Evil series. This initiative remains ongoing, with a company spokesperson recently confirming the forthcoming release of additional Resident Evil remakes.

Meanwhile, the gaming behemoth has initiated a public consultation process to determine which IPs to revisit next, launching the Capcom Super Elections survey. This survey invites fans to express their preferences regarding which of the company's franchises they wish to see revitalized through remakes, sequels, or both. Notably, not all the listed options require advocacy, as the survey includes thriving series such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. However, even after narrowing down the list to exclude titles revisited in the past five years, 17 dormant franchises have been identified by Capcom.

Classic Capcom Franchises Under Consideration for Sequels or Remakes

  • The survey exclusively features games and series dormant for over five years.

Among the listed franchises, the most prominent yet least dormant is Mega Man, with its latest mainline release dating back to late 2018. At the opposite end of the spectrum lie 1942 and Commando, relatively obscure arcade games from the '80s. While the survey offers a comprehensive array of choices, some listed items may serve as diversions. For instance, although the questionnaire directly inquires about fan interest in a Dead Rising reboot, a reputable industry insider's mid-2023 report indicated that such a project is already in progress.

Furthermore, the survey highlights numerous long-forgotten Capcom franchises and games that are unlikely to be revisited without substantial fan demand. Dino Crisis, Lost Planet, Okami, Final Fight, and Rival Schools all fall into this category.

Observing the social media discourse surrounding the survey, many fans express enthusiasm for potential Breath of Fire and Mega Man remakes. Simultaneously, others leverage the Capcom Super Elections to advocate for the return of the Onimusha franchise.
