Highlights

  • With the upcoming release of The War Within, players will bid farewell to the World of Warcraft Companion App, affecting mobile game management.
  • During and post Patch 10.2.7, Dark Heart, players can continue using the app, which brings new story content and heritage armor quests.
  • Blizzard has no replacement in the works, but players can stay connected with friends through the Battle.net mobile app.

World of Warcraft enthusiasts have a limited time left to utilize the mobile Companion App on iOS and Android, as Blizzard has disclosed its impending retirement. The World of Warcraft Companion App, a merger of the Mobile Armory and Legion Companion apps back in 2018, will cease to be supported upon the release of The War Within.

Similar to its predecessors, the World of Warcraft Companion App is a free mobile tool enabling players to oversee and monitor diverse activities spanning back to the Warlords of Draenor era. From tracking command missions, world quests, to faction standings within expansions like Dragonflight's seven factions, the app offers comprehensive features. Apart from expansion-related functionalities, users can engage in auction house transactions, access event calendars, and communicate with guild and community members through any modern iOS or Android device. Notably, the app does not cater to World of Warcraft: Classic content. As of the latest update on March 19, coinciding with the Dragonflight Patch 10.2.6 release, the WoW Companion App remains current.

Despite its utility, the days of the World of Warcraft Companion App are numbered. Blizzard officially confirmed its retirement coinciding with the launch of the The War Within pre-patch. Although the expansion lacks a specific release date as of now, it is currently undergoing alpha testing, with a closed beta phase expected shortly. This discontinuation implies that once The War Within is live, players will no longer be able to access, update, or log into the Companion App via any mobile device. Consequently, remote access to the auction house and calendar services will be terminated, without any replacement alternatives on the horizon.

Discontinuation Timeline

  • The app will be phased out upon the launch of The War Within pre-expansion patch.
  • The War Within is projected for a late summer to early fall 2024 release.
  • The app will be delisted from both the App Store and Google Play Store.

However, players can stay connected with their Battle.net contacts and communities through the complimentary Battle.net mobile app. Until the complete retirement of the companion app, World of Warcraft players can continue using it during and after the Patch 10.2.7, Dark Heart release. This update will introduce a storyline bridging Dragonflight and The War Within, along with heritage armor quests for draenei and trolls.

While the WoW Companion App is set for retirement in 2024, features like Warbands in The War Within expansion will offer alternative means for players to manage their collections. The potential for Blizzard to introduce new mobile access methods for World of Warcraft remains to be seen.
