Blizzard's Update on BlizzCon 2024

Highlights

  • Blizzard opts out of hosting BlizzCon in 2024.
  • BlizzCon, a long-standing tradition since 2005, will be missed for the fifth time.
  • Blizzard will participate in other major events to celebrate its game franchises amidst ongoing expansions.

Blizzard has made it official - there will be no BlizzCon in 2024. While this announcement may disappoint fans, Blizzard assures that it will be present at Gamescom, Dreamhack, and several live events instead.

BlizzCon, a staple Blizzard convention in Anaheim, California, has been a platform for celebrating the company's diverse franchises and major reveals since its inception in 2005. With exceptions in 2006, 2012, 2020, and 2022, and a virtual event in 2021, BlizzCon has been an annual affair.

Regrettably, 2024 marks the fifth year of BlizzCon's absence. Blizzard stated, "After thorough deliberation, we have chosen not to host BlizzCon in 2024." Despite the disappointment this news may bring, fans can take solace in Blizzard's commitment to the return of BlizzCon in the future. Moreover, the company plans to engage in other conventions and showcases to commemorate the expansions in development for World of Warcraft and Diablo 4, the Overwatch Champions Series, and the 30-year anniversary of Warcraft. These appearances will include Gamescom, Dreamhack, and other undisclosed events.

Blizzard's Decision for 2024

  • Blizzard's choice to forgo BlizzCon leads to participation in various events, such as:
  • Gamescom – Featuring World of Warcraft: The War Within and Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred
  • Dreamhack Dallas & Stockholm – Showcasing the Overwatch Champion Series
  • Other game conventions and in-game celebrations to honor the 30th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise

Having maintained a streak of seven consecutive BlizzCons from 2013 to 2019, recent years have seen a biennial pattern. Initially influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision to skip BlizzCon in 2024 suggests a potential shift to a biennial schedule, akin to Final Fantasy 14's Fan Festival, rather than an annual occurrence.

Given the accelerated release schedule of World of Warcraft, Blizzard's flagship game, reducing event frequency seems logical. Typically held in October or November, coinciding with potential The War Within releases, BlizzCon may resurface in 2025 to introduce new details about WoW: Midnight, anticipated for 2026.

While Warcraft traditionally shines at BlizzCon, Blizzard's other franchises face a setback with this news. Historically less visible at events like Gamescom, Blizzard's expanded presence there will be a welcome change. Fans eagerly anticipate Blizzard's potential appearances at major gatherings like PAX, Comic Con, or the Summer Game Fest.
