Obsidian Entertainment's forthcoming FPS RPG, Avowed, is set to arrive this year after being announced in 2020 and spending 4 years in development. A return to form for the studio, Avowed is influenced by the developer's CRPG titles, Pillars of Eternity and its direct sequel, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, incorporating its setting along with facets of its lore and history.
Unlike some series where previous entries are almost required to fully appreciate the later releases, Avowed breaks this trend. Based on PoE, the game has no such barrier, a commendable decision on Obsidian's part.
Avowed's Inclusive Approach
Welcoming All Players to Eora
Pillars of Eternity's world of Eora serves as the foundation for Avowed's setting. Despite this, Obsidian has made it clear that familiarity with PoE is not necessary. The game is designed to be welcoming to new fans interested in a fantasy first-person RPG title with deep narratives, as well as those who have played the previous entries.
Accommodating All Players
While it might benefit fans to play the Pillars of Eternity games ahead of Avowed, it won't be strictly necessary to be intimately familiar with all of their plot beats and reveals. Avowed can serve as both an introduction to Eora for incoming players and a rewarding experience for returning Pillars of Eternity fans.
Obsidian's decision to balance Avowed sets itself up to provide players with the best of both worlds and hopefully will see its vision pay off when it ships.
